Peak performance: Illawarra Performing Arts Centre HVAC refurbishment

The Illawarra Performing Arts Centre (IPAC) is the region’s premier performing arts complex and the glittering jewel in its creative arts and entertainment crown. Located in Wollongong Arts Precinct, it is home to three versatile performance spaces hosting a variety of theatre, musical, comedy and community events.

As part of an extensive $8-million renovation project in 2023, Wollongong City Council engaged Climax Air Conditioning as the principal contractor to undertake a complete refurbishment of the complex’s existing HVAC systems. The significant and highly complex project included the replacement of the existing HVAC system and the installation of new smoke management systems, including upgrades to fire detection and suppression systems.

With the renovations requiring a shutdown of the much-loved community facility, our team was given a tight three-month timeframe for the completion of this considerable program of works. As part of the planning phase, they completed 3D scanning to create a complete ‘as built’ 3D model of existing services. This created an accurate base for modelling the proposed new systems prior to undertaking works, enabling our engineering and project team to envisage the new equipment in place before installation and commissioning.
