Principal Contract - Wollongong City Council

Wollongong Town Hall and Wollongong Art Gallery are two of the city’s best-known cultural and community buildings. Both heritage-listed venues are undergoing major roof and air-conditioning renewal works designed to extend the life of the buildings, improve comfort and support their continued use as important public spaces.

Climax Air Conditioning was engaged directly by Wollongong City Council to deliver the design and construction mechanical services package across the two venues. The works are being carefully staged, beginning at the Town Hall before progressing to the Art Gallery, allowing the broader precinct to remain as accessible as possible while significant building services are replaced and upgraded.

  • Heritage Civic Renewal – Major HVAC and roof renewal works across Wollongong Town Hall and Wollongong Art Gallery, extending the life and performance of two important community buildings.
  • Design & Construct Delivery – Climax Air Conditioning engaged directly by Wollongong City Council to deliver the mechanical services package, with works carefully staged across both venues.
  • Specialist Environmental Control – Mechanical systems designed to provide reliable comfort while maintaining the stable temperature and environmental conditions required within the Art Gallery.
  • Complex Heritage Integration – HVAC upgrades integrated within existing heritage fabric and coordinated with the broader roof replacement works

The project brings together the demands of heritage buildings, public assembly spaces and specialist gallery environments. At Wollongong Art Gallery, stable environmental conditions are particularly important for the preservation and display of artworks and for the Gallery’s ability to host significant loans and exhibitions. The mechanical solution therefore needs to provide reliable, controlled conditions while integrating with an existing heritage fabric and a major roof replacement program.

For Climax Air, the project builds on extensive experience delivering complex HVAC renewals in Wollongong’s civic and cultural buildings, including the nearby Illawarra Performing Arts Centre. The result will be renewed, resilient building services designed to support visitor comfort, collection care and the long-term performance of two valued community assets.
