Regular maintenance and cleaning will help to maintain the efficiency of any air conditioning unit.
Maintenance by homeowners and facility managers
There is regular maintenance that homeowners, facility managers and business owners can do that will keep the unit at optimal running performance.
This includes:
- Cleaning and checking filters in between services. The changing of the seasons is a good reminder to do this.
- For split systems wipe down the indoor wall hung unit with a damp cloth.
- Check the batteries in remote controls. This reduces the chance of battery acid leaking and the need for a new remote.
- Keep the outdoor unit free from debris, puddles, grass and plants. This allows air flow around the unit and ensures condensation can drain away.
- Optimal running temperature is 21-22 degrees – remember the temperature of an AC unit will feel different to ambient temperature, especially in humid environments.
Professional servicing and cleaning
A full service and clean should be undertaken by a professional annually for homes and more frequently for businesses. The minimum recommendation is 6 monthly and for high traffic areas or environments prone to dust, oil, grease etc every 3 months at least.
